Concerto for Accordion and String Orchestra
Commissioned by the Winter Accordion Festival and the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra

The accordion concerto Shape-Shifter was the brainchild of festival director Raimo Vertainen during a casual evening outing. As a devoted accordionist, I’ve taken the initiative to commission new concertos, driven by the limited concert repertoire for my instrument. However, the task of composing a concerto proved to be a formidable challenge. I grappled with the question of what truly defines the essence of the accordion and why it should take center stage, especially amidst a string orchestra.
At some point in the composition process I realized that my longstanding perception of the accordion as a “timbral chameleon,” seamlessly adapting to various musical contexts, also held true when it stood alone as a solo instrument: The accordion doesn’t have a single defining role but instead possesses a natural versatility to assume a wide array of musical identities. This revelation inspired the title of the piece and, in turn, shaped its composition.
In “Shape-Shifter,” the accordion initially endeavors to harmonize with the string orchestra, gradually evolving through a series of transformations into a bold and expressive virtuoso soloist. Along this musical voyage, the instrument serves as both a driving force and a delicate mood-setter, among other roles.
Shape-Shifter is dedicated to my my esteemed accordion mentor Matti Ekman, “the man who gave me music”.
Harmonikkakonsertto Shape-Shifter sai alkunsa festivaalijohtaja Raimo Vertaisen ideasta eräässä illanvietossa. Harmonikka on oma instrumenttini ja soittimeni rajoittuneesta konserttorepertuaarista johtuen olen ollut varsin aloitteellinen uusien konserttojen tilaamisessa. Siitä huolimatta (tai ehkä juuri sen vuoksi) konserton säveltäminen tuntui ongelmalliselta. Erityisen hankalalta tuntui kysymys siitä, mikä on harmonikalle luonteenomaisinta materiaalia, toisinsanottuna minkä vuoksi juuri harmonikan pitäisi olla vaikkapa jousiorkesterin solistina.
Jossain vaiheessa sävellysprosessia tajusin, että vanha ajatukseni harmonikasta eräänlaisena
”sointivärikameleonttina”, joka pystyy sulautumaan luontevasti lähes kokoonpanoon kuin kokoonpanoon, pätee siihen myös soolosoittimena: ei ole olemassa harmonikalle luonteenomaisinta roolia vaan sille on nimenomaan luontevaa toimia hyvin erilaisissa rooleissa. Näin ollen kappaleen nimi oli syntynyt ja sitä mukaa myös teoksen muoto, jossa alun jousiorkesteriin sulautumaan pyrkivästä harmonikasta kehittyy erilaisten muodonmuutoksien kautta lopulta ekstroverttisen virtuoosinen solisti. Matkan varrella instrumentti toimii myös muun muassa eräänlaisena ”moottorina” ja herkkänä tunnelmoijana.
Shape-Shifter on omistettu vanhalle harmonikansoitonopettajalleni Matti Ekmanille, ”miehelle,
joka antoi minulle musiikin”.
