The master of close-up magic, inventor of countless magic tricks, and mentor to many magicians, “Professor” Dai Vernon (1894–1992) was the most significant magician of the last century. Vernon and his creations served as inspiration for my chamber concerto DAI. The three parts of DAI are interconnected like ancient Chinese linking rings, a part of the Professor’s repertoire since childhood. In the midst of Vernon’s life, a highly dramatic accident occurred, nearly resulting in the amputation of his hands. Resolutely refusing recommended surgery by multiple doctors, Vernon’s decision proved to be the right one. His hand function was almost fully restored, and a few years after the accident, the Professor published one of the most famous card tricks of all time, named “Triumph” by his young son, in the “Stars of Magic” magazine. Vernon spent the last 30 years of his life in residence at the famous Magic Castle in Los Angeles, where he still has a reserved place.
Press:
“The Concerto for Eleven Players DAI is a tribute not only to Zagros but also to the magician Dai Vernon. From the serpentine twists, Kujala initiated a distinctive, radiant series of events, incorporating elements of free improvisation, circus music, an exotic fantasy journey, and a lively animated film.” Helsingin Sanomat
