Sep 28 – Oct 1 I will be in Oulu hosting the contemporary music festival Uuden Musiikin Lokakuu. This year focuses on the Finnish contemporary music.
The composer-in-focus is Olli Virtaperko, a multi-faceted musical personality, who has been described as “one of the most striking voices of his generation”. Virtaperko’s music will be presented in three concerts, as a conclusion the contemporary music ensemble TampereRaw conducted by Tuomas Turriago will perform Virtaperko’s saxophone concerto ‘Multikolor’ with international saxophone virtuoso Joonatan Rautiola. Other program of TampereRaw’s concert feature composers from Northern Finland such as Sanna Ahvenjärvi, Sampo Haapamäki and Osmo-Tapio Räihälä.
On the festival we have two extraordinary solo recitals by viola wizard Max Savikangas and young piano virtuoso Hannu Alasaarela. There will also be a premiere performance of a new “lied-opera” by Jouko Tötterström, the most active composer of Oulu region with vast output.
The festival will also host for the first time a masterclass in composition with Markus Fagerudd as teacher.
